Kettlebells - what are they and what can they do for me?

What is a kettlebell ?

A kettlebell is an old Russian weight training device that looks like a cannon ball with a thick, handle protruding from it. Its unique shape creates an off-centered environment for the user, challenging the entire body simultaneously, instead of just one or two muscle groups

The majority of kettlebell exercises are ballistic in nature, which means that the bell is swung rather than merely lifted. As a result, the exercises take the user through multiple vectors, challenging the user's muscles through a wider range of motion. Keeping the kettlebell in constant motion also allows the user to achieve incredible strength while simultaneously developing intense cardio.

This is totally different from traditional weightlifting! While traditional weightlifting is based on a bodybuilding paradigm, kettlebell training revolves around developing functional or tactical strength.

What can they do for me ?

Kettlebells can get you fit and lean in a matter of weeks. They are based around compound, functional moves that involve several muscle groups and therefore you can get twice the workout in literally half of the time.

Anyone who wants to build functional strength will benefit from kettlebell training. The roster of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, NHB, and full contact fighters that have switched to kettlebell training is already huge and continues to grow with each day. The US Secret Service, the FBI, and many elite armed forces and SWAT teams already make extensive use of kettlebell training for their operatives. Also, because kettlebell training allows you to develop cardio and strength simultaneously, people who are pressed for time can achieve a real full body workout in as little as 10 minutes!

Are they good at shifting fat?

Now this is the big one. Kettlebells don't actually help with losing fat... they blowtorch it! You can burn anything up to 1500 calories in one hour and see steady weight loss on a weekly basis. Of course, this assumes that you don't put your kettlebell down after a great workout, stuff your face with pie and chips and then watch TV for the next five hours!

The benefits of Kettlebell training
  • Develops coordination and proprioceptive abilities by being able to change hands and body direction
  • The off-set centre of gravity maximizes shoulder strength, flexibility, and also shoulder and hip stability
  • It conditions the cardiovascular system very effectively by stressing all the body's energy systems and all of the associated areas of physical performance
  • Feel the ultimate burn with high intensity, shorter duration workouts
  • Improves strength, power, balance, flexibility, and co-ordination
