Jeet Kune Do

Mark with Chris Kent

Jeet Kune Do, “The way of the intercepting fist", as it translates, is the set of principles and training methodology, developed by Bruce Lee. JKD is not a set style, but a conceptual attempt of self-expression through martial arts. His main concept was to free his students from clinging to a set style, pattern or mould. According to Bruce Lee a practitioner of Jeet Kune Do should “absorb what is useful, reject what is useless”.

Our JKD curriculum emphasizes economy of motion in four basic ranges of combat; kicking, punching, trapping (hand immobilization) and grappling, (ground fighting). Regardless of the range, students will learn to defend and quickly remove themselves from a confrontation, if necessary with the use of footwork, kicks, punches, strikes with the forearm, knees, elbows also head butts. Students will also learn to understand the concept of distance; In order for an opponent to attack they have to move towards you this provides an opportunity to “Intercept” that attack.

We also work on sensitivity/energy drills and there applications. Students will express themselves as individuals, capitalizing on their natural attributes and develop new ones.

Like any martial art Jeet Kune Do demands high overall fitness, agility and strength.
