Grappling

Mark with Rick Young

Grappling also called wrestling is the use of gripping, handling, and controlling an opponent, typically through the application of various techniques. These techniques incorporate throwing, submissions choke holds and restraints. The idea behind grappling is to take an opponent down and defeat him/her with a choke or lock or with a number of techniques designed to damage an opponent. Grappling includes positions such as the standing clinch, guard, mount and side control.

Students will learn to move freely within these positions and develop effective self-defence skills along with many physical attributes such as flexibility, cardiovascular conditioning and strength. As opposed to relying on strength alone most of the grappling styles use leverage, conditioning and a knowledge of how the body works.

A student will be taught to be aware of ones own body and to feel the movements of their opponents. Grappling can be an intense and physically demanding art.
